SocGen expands APAC shipping finance team
Ting Zhang and Pierre Carassus named co-heads of the business in the region
The Asset 13 May 2022

Société Générale has expanded its shipping finance team in Asia-Pacific by establishing a presence in Singapore, with the aim of fostering closer affinity with its Southeast Asian clients and supporting their sustainability journeys.

The bank has appointed Ting Zhang and Pierre Carassus as co-heads of shipping financing for Asia-Pacific, with immediate effect. Zhang will continue to be based in Hong Kong, and Carassus will be based in Singapore, subject to work visa formalities.

As financial centres in Asia-Pacific, Hong Kong and Singapore also play important roles as shipping hubs in the region, the bank notes. Zhang and Carassus will work together with the coverage team, as well as the global shipping finance team and other stakeholders, to play a leading role in supporting clients’ energy transition and ESG goals.

Zhang will report to David Gore, head of asset finance, Asia-Pacific, and Paul Taylor, global head of shipping & offshore finance. Carassus will have the same reporting line, plus a local one to Raphael Cheminat, group country head for Singapore and head of Southeast Asia.

Zhang joined the bank’s shipping and offshore finance team in Hong Kong in 2007. With 15 years of banking experience and expertise in the maritime sector, she has advised on, originated and executed ship financing transactions for corporate and financial institution clients. Zhang holds a masters in management from ESCP Europe (Paris) and a bachelor’s degree from Fudan University (Shanghai).

Carassus has over 15 years of banking experience with expertise in the shipping and offshore sector. Since joining Société Générale in London in 2014, Carassus has been involved in arranging and advising on a range of maritime projects across various regions. Over the past two years, he has been head of LNG shipping and offshore finance, based in London. Before Société Générale, he spent eight years in Singapore, working in the shipping and offshore teams of ING and Natixis.

Carassus has a masters in management from Audencia Nantes (School of Management / Grande Ecole), obtained in 2006. He also obtained in 2020 a certificate in leadership and management issued by the Chartered Management Institute.
