Manulife Investment Management ( Hong Kong ) has appointed Calvin Chiu as its chief executive officer, a role in which he will lead the firm’s regional pension strategy and expansion, while continuing to serve in his current role as head of retirement for Asia.
This appointment, the company says, marks a strategic move to further its growth in one of the world’s most important wealth and asset management markets. Chiu will oversee the Hong Kong business, and will lead initiatives to deepen client engagement, expand distribution partnerships and enhance the firm’s retirement and wealth offerings.
Chiu joined Manulife in 2010 and has held several senior roles across the organization. As head of Asia retirement, he oversees the Asia pension businesses. Under his leadership, the company has extended its market leadership in the Mandatory Provident Fund business in Hong Kong, expanded its retirement footprint across the region with strengthened pension offerings, and deepened market engagement through strategic partnerships and product innovation.
Previously, he was based in the company’s headquarters in Toronto, Canada, leading executive compensation and global pension and benefits programmes for the company’s employees. With a track record of over two decades in financial services – including roles at a Canadian commercial bank and an international consulting firm – he brings a wealth of experience in integrating actuarial insight with business strategy, while his leadership has driven sustainable growth and delivered client-centric solutions across multiple markets.
“Hong Kong continues to be a key market in driving the growth of our global wealth and asset management business, with our well-established set-up serving a diverse and increasingly affluent population in the city with sophisticated investment needs,” adds Fabio Fontainha, the company’s head of wealth and asset management for Asia. “As Hong Kong and the entire Asia region face demographic shifts and rising demand for retirement and income-oriented solutions, Chiu’s extensive leadership experience in managing the Asia retirement portfolio allows him to nicely bring these capabilities together.”
